R3 Gallery presents GENTLE ON MY MIND Paintings and Sculptures by Alexander Cheves & Walter Logue Opening reception Saturday, March 3rd, 6-9PM
The title of the show is "Gentle on my mind" - it's a line from an old
Glen Campbell song. The basic underlying idea behind the show is work
informed by western landscape, architecture, and state of mind. Alexander
Cheves visual vocabulary consists of iconic shapes - barns, swimming
pools, fields, farms - inspired by a youth spent in California's central
valley. He juxtaposes these shapes to create emotional narratives
commenting on everything from personal relationships to the co-opting of
California farmland for urban development. Walter Logues work is more
literal - he uses text on simple paintings to evoke an emotional
response, whether the viewer recognizes the source material or not. His
work is both hilarious and thought provoking.
